Biographie

David Pagel est professeur de théorie et d'histoire de l'art au département d'art de l'Université de Claremont. Outre ses fonctions d'enseignement, il est reconnu comme critique d'art et commissaire d'exposition dans des milieux bien plus vastes que celui de l'Université de Claremont. Sa riche expérience dans ces domaines l'a amené à concevoir ses cours à l'Université de Claremont, notamment en arts plastiques, en panorama de l'art contemporain et en rédaction d'essais. En plus de son poste à l'Université de Claremont, David Pagel a été commissaire d'exposition associé au Parrish Art Museum de Water Mill, dans l'État de New York, où il a organisé les expositions suivantes : « Telling Stories: Reframing the Narratives », « Unfinished Business: Paintings from the 1970s and 1980s by Ross Bleckner, Eric Fischl and David Salle », « Underground Pop » et « Damaged Romanticism: A Mirror of Modern Emotion ». Il a également collaboré à de nombreux articles du Los Angeles Times. Depuis 1988, il a publié des critiques, des articles et des essais dans Artforum, Art in America, Flash Art, frieze et Art Issues, où il a été rédacteur en chef des critiques de 1998 à 2001. Pagel a récemment publié *Talking Beauty : A Conversation Between Joseph Raffael and David Pagel about Art, Love, Death, and Creativity* (Zero+) et *Jim Shaw* (Lund Humphries). Il travaille actuellement sur un livre consacré aux portraits de John Sonsini. Il co-organise également, avec Kirk Pedersen, *Pattern as Platform*, une exposition réunissant 40 artistes et explorant le motif comme structure et tremplin.
