Best Paper award for Dr Hilary Murphy at EUROCHRIE

Dr Hilary Murphy has won the Best Paper Award in the Technology category at the Eurochrie conference 2008 in Dubai, for her paper co-written with Prof. Harry de Jongh (Hotelschool The Hague) entitled “Student perceptions of IT/IS subject learning in hospitality management degree programmes – a comparative study of “deep learning".

This paper first examines the “deep” learning perception of final year students of two leading hotel schools by focusing on several of the critical constructs of the learning environment i.e. teaching methods, feedback, assessment, student autonomy and deep learning.

The methodology used is quantitative and a survey was administered to final year students covering the key constructs, each tested by several items within each construct.

The data was analyzed to determine the significant differences between the two samples and the relationship between learning environment and “deep learning”.

Results show that there are some significant differences between the 2 groups, particularly in constructs of teaching methods, feedback and assessment which may be explained, in part, by the learning environments. Similarly, there were significant relationships between teaching method items in the learning environment and “deep learning”, which may indicate new approaches to enhance and enable improved student perception of the learning process.

Recently, Dr. Murphy also presented a paper at the 17th annual conference of Frontiers in Service, held in Washington, 2-5 October.
