The Bologna Process: harmonizing European universities

The Bologna Process is a sweeping movement for educational reform which by 2010 will unite different European educational systems into one single European Higher Education Area.

A new 3-tiered university structure:

Bachelor, Master, Doctorate

The Bologna Process harmonizes Europe's different national systems into one common structure consisting of three cycles:

Bachelor (3-4 years)
Master (1-2 years)
Doctorate (3-4 years).

A new programme structure based on credits
Bologna university programmes are based on a credit system which facilities recognition and mobility among European countries.

Work is also underway on harmonizing the European and US credit systems to facilitate mobility internationally.

Widespread reform

The Bologna Declaration was originally signed in 1999 by 29 countries, including Switzerland, and has since been accepted by nearly all the countries in Europe.

Several international and European organizations are also involved in the process of reform, including the Council of Europe, the European Commission and UNESCO, and quality insurance organizations such as ENQA.
