From teaching to learning

At EHL we emphasize the importance of learning how to learn. Students are helped to evaluate what they are learning with a critical eye, to know when and where to seek additional information, to adapt their knowledge to different circumstances and to supplement it with multiple sources that can provide insight for wise decisions.

Learning how to learn

Knowledge and technology evolve very rapidly in a sector as dynamic as that of hospitality. What is important is not so much transmitting knowledge as making sure that students are internalizing the information and can use it in action.

We don't try to give our students one-time knowledge for use throughout their careers. On the contrary, we teach them to be attentive to many different sources of information, derived both from evolving new technologies and from personal networking, that provide a range of internal and external resources upon which to draw. Students learn how to synthesize, evaluate and prioritize information so that they can make informed decisions quickly, at the right time - and often, in hospitality, on the run!

Conquering independence

EHL helps students to become responsible for their own learning. Students gradually move from a structured learning environment to more unfamiliar situations in which they themselves are responsible for organizing their work and producing results. In this way, they develop the resources and strategies to deal successfully with the more complex and unpredictable challenges of the workplace.

Autonomy and accountability

On the academic level, this approach helps students develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. On the professional level, personal responsibility is even more important. Learning at EHL takes place in a real, not simulated environment, with the dangers of the real world. Irresponsible behaviour can have immediate and dramatic consequences. EHL students are trained to to be vigilant, think ahead, take preventive action and intervene when necessary. They learn to be both responsible and accountable.

Faculty mentoring

EHL faculty are committed to helping students achieve autonomy. Programmes are carefully designed to achieve this process gradually. Students are not left to sink or swim. They are given support and guidance while being helped along the path to independence and responsibility.
