Academic requirements

Do I need to pass a university entrance exam?

In most cases you do not need to pass an entrance exam. It depends on the educational system in which you have studied and on your secondary school diploma.

Some countries do not require examinations for entry to university (e.g. Britain, France). In this case, you do not need to pass an entrance examination. Other countries (e.g. Spain, China, Korea) do require university entrance examinations for students entering university in these countries. In this case, you need to provide proof that you have passed these national exams successfully.

Candidates who have obtained an international secondary school qualification such as the International Baccalaureate are not required to pass an entrance exam.

In some cases, EHL accepts other qualifications for entry to EHL instead of an entrance exam, such as presenting satisfactory SAT 1 or AP scores or successfully completing one year of studies at a recognized university. These exceptions will be treated on a case-by-case basis.

Are the SAT 1 scores a compulsory requirement?

No, except for students who are presenting an American High School Diploma. Although EHL does not set an official cut-off point, the Admission Commission generally expects a minimum of 1000 points (combined math and verbal) before a file can be considered.

For foreign students presenting the SAT we take into account the fact that the examinations are taken in a foreign language. Verbal test results which are not up to the level of those presented by a good native speaker may be supplemented by excellent TOEFL scores.

What are the British A-level requirements? Do A-levels exempt me from sending yearly transcripts?

The three A-level subjects taken should be relevant to studies at EHL and include business /economics and /or sciences and mathematics. Students should avoid presenting an A-level in their native language as one of the required subjects (e.g. candidates whose native language is French should preferably avoid presenting French as an academic A-level subject). The average grade required to be considered for admission is B. A minimum grade of C is required for all subjects.

Some institutions preparing students for A-levels do not issue transcripts. If this is the case, we suggest that you ask individual teachers of your major academic subjects for progress reports which can be sent to us.

What are the International Baccalaureate requirements? What is the final result required for admission?

The minimum IB score to be admitted in the Bachelor programme is 28 points. Please note that the full IB diploma is required, not just some IB certificates in certain subjects.

What are the requirements concerning the American High School Diploma?

You should be able to show that you have taken a rigorous course of study, as demonstrated by your transcript, with strong English, math and science subjects and a recommended 3 years of a foreign language.

In addition to the High School Diploma itself, you should submit evidence of higher achievement. You will be required to take three courses taken at advanced level as part of your programme of studies, of which at least one should be a quantitative or scientific subject. Advanced or higher-level courses may include AP examinations, International Baccalaureate HL certificates, or SAT subject tests. We will take into account GPA and class rank when available.

Satisfactory SAT I scores are required as a baseline, i.e. at least 500 in both the math and verbal/critical reading sections. For non-native speakers, an excellent TOEFL score may be presented in lieu of the verbal/critical reading section.

What are the French baccalauréat requirements?

The Baccalauréats of the type ES or S are usually a better preparation for EHL than the Bac L, although a literary baccalauréat may be accepted if overall grades are high and good marks have been obtained in the science/math component. Baccalauréats of the technological and industrial type are also accepted, i.e. tertiaires STT and industriels STI. For these types of bacs we expect an overall average of about 15.
